Preventive checkups and tooth protection for children and adults

Prevention is the part of dentistry concerned with protecting and preserving the health of the teeth and the entire oral cavity, in children and adults. At the Elite Dent dental practice in Banja Luka we perform preventive checkups, professional removal of deposits, fluoridation and fissure sealing.

Caries and gum disease do not cause pain in the early stage, so without regular checkups they are only discovered when treatment is more complex and more expensive. A preventive checkup is short and painless, and we recommend it twice a year.

What a preventive checkup at Elite Dent includes

  • A detailed examination of all teeth and gums - detecting caries and inflammation at the earliest stage
  • Removal of soft and hard deposits (tartar) - deposits are the main cause of gum disease
  • Fluoridation - strengthening the tooth enamel and additional protection against caries
  • Fissure sealing in children - protection of the grooves on the chewing surfaces, where caries most often occurs
  • Oral hygiene advice - adapted to your teeth and habits

Prevention in children

The first visit to the dentist should take place by the first birthday, usually between 6 months and one year of age. The most important reason is the prevention of early childhood caries, i.e. caries of the milk teeth. Hygiene starts as soon as the first milk teeth erupt.

At the early checkup we detect any problems in the child's oral health and advise parents on preventive measures:

  • Proper tooth brushing
  • Choosing a toothpaste and toothbrush for the youngest
  • Proper nutrition
  • The importance of preserving healthy milk teeth

Milk teeth hold the place for permanent teeth. When a milk tooth is lost too early, the neighbouring teeth tilt and move towards the empty space, so the permanent tooth has nowhere to erupt properly. The consequence is an irregular bite that later requires orthodontic treatment. That is why at Elite Dent we treat and preserve milk teeth just like permanent ones.

Prevention in adults

Regular checkups and professional removal of deposits protect the teeth and gums throughout life. They are especially important if you have fillings, crowns, bridges or implants, because deposits are more easily retained around them.

Bleeding gums, tooth sensitivity and bad breath are signs that require a checkup. Read more about gum treatment on the Periodontology page.
